The UAE has invested heavily in developing modern roads, railways, airports, ports, and public transport systems that connect its seven emirates and link it with the rest of the world.
One of the most impressive aspects of the UAE’s transport sector is its road network, which covers more than 100,000 kilometers and ranks among the best in the world. The UAE has built several highways and bridges that facilitate the movement of people and goods across the country and beyond. Some of the notable examples are the Sheikh Zayed Road, which connects Dubai and Abu Dhabi; the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, which connects all the emirates; and the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge, which is the longest bridge in the UAE and connects Abu Dhabi with its western region. The UAE also has a network of smart roads that use advanced technologies such as sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to monitor traffic conditions, reduce congestion, enhance safety, and optimize fuel consumption.
Another remarkable achievement of the UAE’s transport sector is its railway system, which is one of the most ambitious and innovative projects in the region. The UAE is currently developing a national railway network that will span 1,200 kilometers and connect all the emirates with each other and with neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait.
The UAE’s transport sector also boasts of having some of the busiest and most modern airports and ports in the world. The UAE has 14 international airports that serve more than 120 airlines and 260 destinations. The Dubai International Airport is the largest airport in the UAE and the busiest in terms of passenger traffic in the world. It handles more than 90 million passengers per year and has four terminals, three concourses, two runways, and a cargo village. The Abu Dhabi International Airport is another major airport in the UAE and serves as a hub for Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the UAE. It handles more than 20 million passengers per year and has three terminals, two runways, and a cargo terminal.
The UAE also has several seaports that handle more than 60% of the total trade volume in the Gulf region. The Jebel Ali Port in Dubai is the largest port in the UAE and the ninth-largest in the world.
It has a capacity of handling 22.1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year and has 67 berths, 24 cranes, and a free zone. The Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi is another major port in the UAE and is one of the most advanced and automated ports in the world.
