Great Barrier Island, Auckland

Great Barrier Island, located in the outer Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, is situated approximately 100 kilometres north-east of central Auckland.

Boasting an expansive area of 285 square kilometres, it proudly holds the title of the sixth-largest island in New Zealand and the fourth-largest within the main chain.

Embracing the majestic landscape, the island’s highest point, Mount Hobson, stands tall at an impressive 627 metres above sea level. Governed by the esteemed Auckland Council, Great Barrier Island’s rich history dates back to its initial exploitation for valuable minerals and the revered kauri trees that once flourished here.

While limited agriculture was practiced on the island, the majority of its stunning landscape, encompassing around 60% of the total area, is dedicated as a nature reserve, meticulously preserved and cared for by the diligent Department of Conservation.

This harmonious blend of vibrant nature and breathtaking views creates an atmosphere on the island that is truly unmatched.
