Zinciriye Madrasa, Mardin

Sultan Isa Madrasa was built in 1385 by the last Artuqid Sultan, Melik Necmettin Isa bin Muzaffer Davud bin El Melik Salih, who ruled in Mardin.

Melik Necmeddin Isa fought against Mongol King Timur in Mardin and was imprisoned in this madrasah for a while upon losing the battle.

The Sultan Isa Madrasa, draws attention even from afar with its sliced shaped domes on its eastern and western ends and a high monumental portal that coincides with its eastern side.

The building, which covers a rectangular and wide area, consists of a courtyard, mosque, tomb and various additional spaces on two floors. When you enter through the gate, a section covered with a star vault may be seen.

On the west, there is a corridor opening to the courtyard to the mosque. The upper floor consists mostly of small rooms. These are the chambers of the people who once studied in the madrasah.
