The opening of gallery, as one of first services for Izmir in the field of plastic arts, provided artists opportunity of exhibiting their works and also gave a new breath to the art life of the city with the State exhibitions held in every year and art courses organized for amateurs.
The exhibition in the Precious Objects Section include oil lamps, figurines, glass works, bronze objects, a treasury room and coin displays from different periods.
The museum consists of 3 main sections on a single storey. These sections are: Stone Objects Section, Ceramic Objects Section, and Precious Objects Section. The Ceramic Objects Section consists of two floors. Findings and ceramic fragments from prehistoric settlements around Izmir, especially those discovered in the Smyrna Mound, dating back to the end of the Byzantine period are exhibited.
Downstairs, the outstanding ceramic artefacts of the ancient cities of Baklatepe, Limantepe, Kocabaştepe and Panaztepe, as well as Iasos (Güllük), Phokaia (Foça), Klazomenai (Urla), Kyma (Aliağa), Erythrai (Ildırı) and Pitane (Çandarlı), i.e. the prehistoric settlements around İzmir, are exhibited in display cases.
