The synagogue is a stunning architectural masterpiece that stands tall in the heart of the Tunisian capital. The synagogue owes its existence to the visionary 19th-century Italian Jewish statesman Giacomo Di Castelnuovo who envisaged a synagogue that would symbolize the Jewish community’s resilience and determination.
The synagogue was finally erected in 1937 by French architect Victor Valensi, who did an exemplary job designing it in the iconic Art Deco architectural style.
The synagogue’s design, coupled with its history, makes it the perfect representation of Tunisia’s multicultural heritage.
However, it is unfortunate that the Nazis had to shut it down during their occupation of Tunisia.
Nonetheless, the synagogue continues to stand tall as a symbol of the Jewish community’s spirit and Tunisia’s rich culture.
