Black River Gorges National Park

Black River Gorges National Park is the largest nature reserve in Mauritius, a spectacularly wild expanse of thick forest and home to more than 300 species of flowering plants as well as nine species of bird unique to Mauritius.

Explore the dense forest and try to spot the famous pink pigeon, one of nine species of bird unique to Mauritius.

Also look out for the Mauritius kestrel, the green echo parakeet and the Mauritius cuckoo shrike.

The park is a popular spot for picnics, hiking and scenic drives. Choose from a network of hiking trails that crisscross pine forests, gorges and rugged mountains.

Along the way, try to spot the rare tambalacoque (dodo tree), black ebony trees and wild guavas.

Bird-watchers should look out for the famous pink pigeon, the Mauritius kestrel, the green echo parakeet and the Mauritius cuckoo shrike.

Don’t miss the park’s Chamarel Waterfalls, the highest in Mauritius at 83m that are best seen after heavy rains. For the best views, head to the Alexandria Falls and the Black River Gorges viewpoint.
