Volos Vacation Guide

Located approximately 220 kilometres north of Athens and south of Thessaloniki, Volos is the sixth most populous city in Greece and the capital of the Magnesia regional unit within the Thessaly Region.

Being the only seaport from Thessaly, the country’s largest agricultural region, Volos is a major industrial center and serves as a bridge between Europe and Asia.

Most of the buildings in the city are modern, constructed in the aftermath of the 1955 earthquakes. The municipal units of Volos, Nea Ionia, and Iolkos, as well as many suburban communities, form the greater Volos area.

The economy of Volos is supported by manufacturing, trade, services, and tourism, while the University of Thessaly provides ample opportunity for conferences, exhibitions, and other significant sporting, cultural, and scientific events.

It has hosted several athletic competitions, including the 2004 Olympics and the 2013 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics.
