Muğla lies on an elevation of 670 metres, and as such its significantly cooler climate is a welcome retreat from hot and sticky conditions of the coast.
It is surrounded by steep slopes denuded of soil, paved with calcerous geology, and a scrub cover which gives the immediate vicinity of Muğla a barren appearance uncharacteristic of its region. Arable land is limited to valley floors.
