Summer is a particularly beautiful season, lasting from December to February, and usually quite mild due to the city’s altitude, which is over 1,000 meters. During this season, temperatures can range from around 15°C (60°F) at night to around 25°C (75°F) during the day.
Despite this mildness, days above 30°C (86°F) are not uncommon, although temperatures above 35°C (95°F) are rare. In fact, the highest temperature ever recorded in Johannesburg was 41.4°C (106.5°F). This goes to show that the city can get pretty hot during the summer months.
If you’re planning on visiting Johannesburg during the summer, it’s important to note that the UV index is also extremely high during this season, usually hovering around 14-16. As such, it is highly advised that you wear sunscreen at all times when being outside.
Other seasons in Johannesburg, such as winter and spring, are also characterised by a subtropical climate, although they may differ slightly in terms of temperature and overall weather conditions. Nonetheless, Johannesburg remains a tropical paradise all year round.
