Bulgaria

Despite nearly half of all paved roads belonging to the lowest category of roads, the country has made progress in expanding its highway network, which currently spans 829 kilometers as of December 2015. Private companies operate coaches, adding to the transportation options available to the public.

In the capital city of Sofia, three major national bus terminals, namely the Central, Western, and Southern Terminals, serve as vital hubs for travelers.

These terminals facilitate convenient and efficient connections to various destinations within Bulgaria. Additionally, in rural areas, share taxis are an important mode of transport between smaller settlements, providing a vital link for residents.

While road transport remains the dominant form of transportation, Bulgaria’s railway systems face outdated infrastructure and relatively low average speeds.

However, efforts are continuously being made to improve the efficiency and reliability of the rail network. Looking beyond roads and railways, Bulgaria also boasts tram services and a metro system in Sofia, further enhancing the country’s public transportation options.
