The New Church, Bergen

Nykirken, a historical church in Bergen, holds a significant place in the city's culture. Built in 1621, it earned its name as the newest of the town's parish churches at that time.

Situated near Vågen, the church has witnessed numerous transformations over the years, mainly due to devastating city fires. With its distinctive mansard roof and bell tower, Nykirken stood as one of Bergen’s most modern structures in the early 19th century.

Initially, the church was constructed with a cost-effective low tower helmet instead of a spire. However, in 1955, the original plan was finally realized, and the majestic church spire was added.

Stepping inside the church, visitors are greeted by the awe-inspiring Baptism Angel. Adorned in resplendent gold-colored attire and wings, this angelic figure adds to the church’s cultural and historical significance.

Nykirken truly reflects the rich heritage of Bergen, embodying both architectural grandeur and spiritual sanctity.
