The Chora Mosque (Kariye Camii)

The Chora Mosque, also known as Kariye Camii, is an exceptional example of Muslim architecture that showcases the rich history of Turkey.

The mosque is famous worldwide for its remarkable collection of well-preserved mosaics and frescoes, which are considered to be some of the finest examples of East Roman painting from the last period.

The mosque’s artistic significance in the Middle Ages is evident in its portrayal of depth in mosaics and the moving style of figures, which foretells the Renaissance period.

The name “Kariye” has an interesting origin as it is derived from the ancient Greek word “Khora”, meaning “countryside”. This name was given to the mosque as the old church and monastery remained outside the walls of Constantinople.

The Chora Mosque’s rich history and cultural importance make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in exploring the Muslim heritage of Turkey.
