It was during this time that Bishop Jean Baptiste Pompallier, the first Catholic bishop in New Zealand, acquired the land on which the cathedral now proudly stands.

Originally, a humble wooden chapel graced the site in 1842, serving as a place of worship for the growing Catholic community. As the years passed and the congregation flourished, a stone church replaced the original chapel in 1848. This architectural marvel underwent further expansion in 1884 to accommodate the increasing number of faithful attendees.
