August Kestner, along with his nephew Hermann Kestner, laid the foundation of this museum through their extensive collection of artifacts.

Over time, the collections of Friedrich Culemann and Friedrich Wilhelm von Bissing were added, further enriching the museum’s offerings. With such an impressive and varied collection, it’s no surprise that the museum was renamed in December 2007 to avoid confusion with the Kestnergesellschaft, a local art gallery.
