Its doors were first opened in 2002, and since then, it has proudly served as the mother church for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. As the seat of Archbishop José Horacio Gómez, this magnificent structure stands as a beacon of faith and a symbol of unity for the Catholic community in the region.
It is worthy to note that the construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was necessitated by the unfortunate event of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which caused severe damage to its predecessor, the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana.
Thanks to the vision and leadership of Roger Cardinal Mahony, the then Archbishop of Los Angeles, the ambitious project of Our Lady of the Angels was initiated in 1998 and eventually dedicated on September 2, 2002.
This cathedral, with its awe-inspiring architecture and spiritual significance, is a testament to the enduring power and importance of the church in our lives.
