This magnificent castle is a bastion fort that has stood the test of time, having been built to withstand pirate attacks. However, due to its location too far inside the bay, the castle was unable to serve its original purpose. Nevertheless, the castle still stands tall and is considered to be the oldest stone fort in the Americas.

Its impressive architecture takes visitors on a journey through time, and it was for this reason that it was listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of “Old Havana and its Fortifications” in 1982.
