Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya river, it was once the capital of Siam (now known as Thailand).
Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 and served as a major trading hub between Europe, India, China and Southeast Asia.
It was also known for its impressive Buddhist temples and palaces decorated with intricate sculptures, murals, and inscriptions.
The city flourished until it was destroyed by Burmese troops in 1767. Even though it is now in ruins, many of its historical sites are still intact and can be seen today.
